Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language

Academic Products

Below I have included two of my best exemplary works. The papers I have included are the basis for my research interests. The first work is a research paper concerning African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and its correlation to identity within the African American community. As a result of this paper, I have become interested in in-group prejudice and strategies for helping students maintain cultural vision and voice while meeting academic writing standards for higher education.

I have developed a deep passion for writing and find it to be a liberating avenue for expression. As a teacher, I feel it is my duty to help students discover and cultivate their own writing voice. To do this, I want to be able to inform students on what their exact expectations are; to know the standards, but to meet them in various ways. I became curious about university expectations for academics, and then specifically about my university, Gonzaga. This inquiry then became the platform for my action research project which explores academic writing and definitions of critical thinking. It is my hope, after some revisions, to submit this paper for publication.
